A downtown crossing with direction-specific vehicle access

Paso del Norte connects El Paso, Texas, with Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. The City of El Paso locates it at 1000 South El Paso Street on the U.S. side and Juárez Avenue on the Mexican side. CBP reports this crossing as entry 240202 and lists 24-hour operation.

The city describes passenger vehicles traveling northbound into El Paso and pedestrians traveling in both directions. Keep that distinction in mind when planning a round trip: the same bridge is not the southbound vehicle route described by the city.

General lanes, Ready Lane and the walking report

CBP reports general passenger and Ready Lane information, plus a separate pedestrian reading. Ready Lane requires eligible RFID travel cards for everyone age 16 or older in the vehicle. A U.S. passport card is an eligible type; a passport book alone is not.

CBP’s report for Paso del Norte also includes a SENTRI passenger reading, so check it alongside the general and Ready Lane figures. The city separately lists a northbound SENTRI lane at nearby Stanton–Lerdo. Follow the posted signs to reach the lane you are approved for.

Plan the southbound drive separately

For travel into Mexico by car, the city describes southbound passenger-vehicle lanes at Stanton–Lerdo, located at 1001 South Stanton. A person walking and a person driving therefore need different return-route planning. The pedestrian estimate on this page concerns entry into the United States, even though the city describes walking access in both directions.

CBP’s Paso del Norte notice lists AM 1620 for crossing information. The camera button opens the Fideicomiso de Puentes Fronterizos portal, where the selected bridge view should be checked before comparing the image with a wait estimate.

Travel documents for the northbound crossing

CBP’s land-entry guidance includes valid U.S. passports and passport cards for U.S. citizens. For Mexican citizens it lists a passport with visa or a Border Crossing Card. Review the rules that match each traveler’s citizenship and status before approaching the pedestrian or vehicle inspection route.

Verify lane eligibility separately. Having an accepted entry document does not automatically qualify someone for Ready Lane. When traveling in a group, check each person’s document rather than relying on one card held by the driver.

Insurance for the driving portion in Mexico

Arrange Mexican liability insurance before driving into Mexico. Federal-road rules require coverage for injury or property damage caused to third parties. CONDUSEF advises reviewing policy coverage and exclusions and verifying insurer and agent authorization.

Put the policy review on the checklist for your southbound driving route, alongside documents.
